Winch Rope Extensions

Carrying a winch extension in your vehicle can make the difference between getting stuck on the trail and making it home. Sometimes a winch line just isn't long enough to reach a solid winch anchor point, and that is where the winch extension steps in.

Owning a winch extension allows for a shorter winch line to be installed on the winch. If you need extra length, the extension is always there. A shorter than factory winch line has a few important benefits. There is less chance of the winch line spooling too much on one side of the drum and contacting the bumper or winch itself. This can damage the winch line so it is best to avoid.

Another benefit of running a shorter winch line is that the winch is much more efficient. The maximum pulling power is rated from the drum of the winch, and each wrap past that decreases power, so with less winch line, there will be less wraps on the drum, therefore, more pulling power.

If extra length is needed, use the extension, but in most cases a very long winch line is not needed, and as stated, a shorter winch line has great benefits.

Superline XD Winch Extensions

The Superline XD synthetic winch rope is manufactured with the most advanced technology in synthetic rope manufacturing today. The rope starts as a larger diameter line and is heated and stretched down to its final diameter. This process gives the Superline XD an excellent breaking strength since it has the strength of a larger diameter line in a smaller diameter. The pre-stretching also gives the rope better abrasion resistance compared to normal Dyneema winch ropes.

The rope has a tightly braided cover along the whole length of the rope for even more abrasion resistance. This cover gives the inner Superline core excellent protection against abrasion, especially abrasion from dirt and sand. With coverless winch ropes, dirt and sand can get lodged in between the strands of the rope and can cause fraying. In some cases leads to a 20% loss in the rope's breaking strength.

The Superline XD cover keeps dirt and sand out of the core and prevents this abrasion from happening. It also gives the inner core complete protection from UV rays. Ultimately this means that if used properly, the Superline XD will last much longer than a normal winch line, and you won't have to replace your line nearly as often.
